Tomatoes Linked to Salmonella Scare

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but various restaurants have been pulling back on tomatoes because of traces of salmonella causing food poisoning. Most prominent places that have taken action are fast food spots like McDonald’s. Our local Taco Bell has placed warning signs outside its doors, informing customers. Many other restaurants have taken action and stopped serving tomatoes. Illnesses have been traced to at least 16 states. Not all types of tomatoes have been linked to salmonella. Until the FDA traces the source of the problem, it might be a good idea to be aware of this food issue. Pass the word on.

Earlier tonight at Chili’s we tried to order the chips and salsa. Our waiter told us that because of the Salmonella Scare, they didn’t have any salsa left. I freaked out when I heard this, because I usually snack on grape tomatoes by the hand full when I’m at home. Luckily grape tomatoes aren’t affected.

Does this extend to tomatoes in super markets? What about washing the lovely fruit? I LOVE tomatoes so this is a problem very near and dear to my heart.

    Hi Elle,

From what I’ve read in the San Jose Mercury, the FDA still does not recommend eating tomatoes even after washing them. As far as the super market situation, I believe they are affected too. I know that Trader Joe’s opted to remove tomato offerings from shelves for the time being. I’d play it safe for now and try to avoid tomatoes for now until the FDA can pinpoint where this is all coming from.
