With the recent hot weather hitting the Bay Area, it’s almost instinctively that you crave something to relieve you from the heat. What better way to get your mind off the sun than a scoop of ice cream? Ice cream has always been my go to form of relief to cool off when temperatures begin to soar. But, even with summer winding down to the end of the season, you still can enjoy ice cream all year round.

Recently, I was fortunate to try a few samples of a few flavors of ice cream and sorbet from Rumba Desserts. This California based company focuses on capturing the flavors of Peru by using exotic Peruvian fruits, making their product unique and intriguing at the same time. How about a Purple Corn sorbet for being special? Rumba’s Citron Morado Sorbet is just one of their unique flavors that combines an Organic Peruvian Purple Corn infusion with Lisbon Lemon and Tahitian Lime Juice. It’s an uncommon flavor combination, yet it’s refreshingly exciting to your taste buds.

What really impressed me with Rumba’s products was how much flavor bursts through. Since Rumba Desserts uses all natural ingredients, you can expect their ice cream and sorbets to taste just like real fruit. The instant I tried the Mango Sorbet, I felt as if I was eating a real mango. It was far from tasting all artificial and sugar loaded. The taste of mango was there and you knew it.

A Scoop of Lucuma Ice Cream

The real highlight for me was sampling the Lucuma Ice Cream. Lucuma is a Peruvian fruit that has the characteristics of having a maple-caramel like taste. In ice cream form, this flavor was just pure bliss. It was amazingly silky, and the flavors truly reminded me of a caramel ice cream, only this time, the flavor was coming from the Lucuma fruit. It’s on my list of recommended flavors to try.

You can find Rumba Desserts at various specialty grocery stores around the Bay Area by following this link. There are also several tasting sessions going around, giving you the chance to sample some of Rumba Desserts’ ice cream and sorbets. For more information about Rumba Desserts and to see if a tasting is near you, you can contact them at info@rumbadesserts.com.

This is definitely not your ordinary dessert that you grew up with… Ice cream and sorbets infused with liqueur? Dessert just got better.

I first had a sample of Silver Moon Desserts at the SF Chefs.Food.Wine event a few weeks back. They were showcasing their Mojito Ice flavor. Little cups of white sorbet garnished with mint, were just calling out to be tried. Just after one spoonful, we were hooked. The texture reminded me of a soft snow cone with the flavors lime and mint rushing at you. The rum didn’t overpower the dessert at all, which I appreciated. That could explain why we couldn’t resist taking more samples.

It was here where I had a talk with Sheri Tate, the president of Silver Moon Desserts. With my camera swinging around my shoulder, Sheri quickly figured out that I was a food blogger. I had the chance to talk to her about Silver Moon Desserts. This Los Gatos company launched their ice cream and sorbets in 2008, and quickly gained industry recognition, already winning several awards in a short time span. Before leaving their booth, Sheri offered me a list of stores selling her desserts.

The Mojito Ice flavor left me with such positive impression, that I had to have one in my freezer at home. So, I finally made it to a store nearby in search of it. There wasn’t any Mojito Ice available at the store I went to, so I took it as an opportunity to try out a new flavor – the Mango Mimosa sorbet. It sounded too good to pass up. The sorbet was a combination of sweet mango and champagne. Again, the flavor of the champagne wasn’t too overwhelming. It’s more of a hint rather than a full rush. The flavors paired well together. What I liked best was how light it was. You can enjoy a scoop or two of sorbet without feeling overly full.

This truly is a simple, yet refreshing take on ice cream and sorbet. Silver Moon Desserts is constantly holding tastings around the Bay Area. For a list of locations, check out this list of upcoming tastings. It’s the best way to see what Silver Moon Desserts are all about. For those who don’t have a store nearby to check out Silver Moon Desserts, you can always visit their website for more information.

www.biritecreamery.com

After chowing down pizzas at Pizzeria Delfina, a quick stroll down 18th street for dessert at Bi-Rite Creamery was expected. Rose, my younger brother Lawrence, and I quickly walked down 18th Street with the chilly San Francisco cold biting. It’s funny to think that we were craving for ice cream during a cold night. Knowing how good the ice cream is at Bi-Rite Creamery, the cold weather would not stop us from enjoying their offerings.

Lawrence and I had the ice cream here with our cousin Romel a few months back. Lawrence was anxious to return back. We each indulged in the following flavors of goodness:

Cookies & Cream
Malted Vanilla With Peanut Brittle
Coconut

Sweet. Creamy. Satisfying. Those are the words I describe the ice cream here. Everything is made in small batches. This makes sure that the freshness and high quality is there.

Ice cream has always been a comfort food for me. It would always remind me of when I was a kid. To know that I can have that feeling with every scoop of ice cream feels good.

It’s a spot for dates because…
Bi-Rite Creamery prides itself by having fresh ingredients in its ice cream. They use organic and local ingredients whenever possible. This pride shows in the taste of their ice cream. Stopping by allows you to fully appreciate the experience. Also, with their changing menu, you are sure to discover a new favorite each time you go back.

After enjoying a delicious lunch at Sotto Mare, we walked around North Beach in San Francisco, CA. With the sun shining on a beautiful day, gelato would be the perfect complement. A large ice cream cone outside of this spot caught my attention and made me want to check out what was inside. Behold! Many selections of gelato flavors that range from lychee to tiramisu. Peering through the glass to see all of the flavors will make your sweet tooth go insane for a sugar rush.

I tried the tiramisu and was pleased with my choice. It was very rich and creamy. You can’t really go wrong with whatever you pick here. Cone or cup, it’s your call. Just by looking at their selections will make you want to try it all.

It’s a spot for dates because…
A hot sunny day in the middle of North Beach will make you want to cool off. A scoop of gelato is just what you need for that.

Fro-ggie
1554 Washington Blvd.
Fremont, CA 94539
www.fro-ggie.com

A new trend has caught the attention of those with a sweet tooth. Frozen yogurt is here and various restaurateurs are taking advantage of the trend with many spots opening up lately. I have been hearing a lot of hype behind fro-yo, short for frozen yogurt. I was able to try frozen yogurt at a Pinkberry in San Diego, CA. Ever since then, I’ve been hooked.

Fortunately, there’s a local fro-yo spot close to where I stay in the Bay Area. It’s called Fro-ggie. They serve frozen yogurt along with various fruit and cereal toppings to go along with your order. If you are unfamiliar with fro-yo, think of it as non fat or low fat soft serve ice cream.

The flavors range from the usual original tart, which is my favorite, to fruit infused ones like pineapple or blueberry. Fro-ggie claims to change up their flavor offers regularly so you’ll have something new to try when they do.

In all, I’ve found it to be a spot that is best suited for an after dinner dessert spot or a change from your regular meet up coffee house. The ambience is simplistic with bright colored pillows on the side couch and photos of frozen yogurt on the wall. You can think of it as a modern ice cream parlor. Also, for those outside of Fremont, CA, just do a quick search for frozen yogurt spots near your area. They should give you the same experience.

It’s a spot for dates because…
Knowing that you can fulfill your sweet tooth cravings by taking a healthier route is good. Treat Fro-ggie as a date spot itself or a way to close your date with some dessert.

It was very delicious and an awesome twist to end any meal. Everytime I tell someone I’ve had fried ice cream, the puzzled look on their faces always makes me smirk. Maybe you have the same puzzled look and want to see what it looks like. I posted the picture on my Foodbuzz profile.
