I was instantly hooked onto Hamachi Kama because of how tender and sweet it is. Hamachi Kama is the collar of a Yellowtail Tuna. Some might consider it just as extra scrap meat, but when broiled or grilled, it can make for the perfect appetizer or meal. My first real chance to savor Hamachi Kama was at my favorite local sushi restaurant in Fremont called Satomi. They serve a generous portion broiled to perfection. We usually would have one order to accompany the rest of our meal.

Recently, my cousin discovered that Suruki Supermarket in San Mateo offered uncooked Hamachi Kama. I took it as an opportunity to try and pick up a few to grill this past weekend. I browsed through Suruki and was able to pick up some collars. While browsing I noticed they also had Uni, Monk Fish Liver, and even Toro available. I was pretty impressed at the selection of goods they had.

Back home, I fired up the grill and prepared the collars just by seasoning them with sea salt and pepper on each side. I grilled them for about 15 minutes total, flipping the collars occasionally as they cooked. No special herbs or spices here for this dish. I served the collars with slices of lemon wedges and added a small pinch of finishing salt to them. If you want some extra flavor you could try serving a ponzu sauce along with the dish or do what I did and combine a little soy sauce and lemon juice for a variation of a toyomansi.

Ramen Club
723 California Drive
Burlingame, CA 94010
(650) 347-3690

The cold Bay Area nights are approaching. One way to keep warm is to grab a bowl of hot soup. I found a spot that would serve just that…

Ramen Club in Burlingame, CA is just the place to satisfy your need for a hot bowl of soup. There are many flavors of their Ramen and Udon to choose from. My favorites have been the Karaage Udon and the plain Miso Ramen. On certain nights, Ramen Club offers special seasonal soups. Just the other night, they offered a very savory Special Ramen which had bacon, butter, corn, and deep fried vegetables. The bowls of soup aren’t small either. You are getting big servings – plenty of noodles and vegetables.

If you aren’t in the mood for soup, there are traditional Japanese menu items to pick from. A variety of sushi rolls, sashimi, and dinner plates are available. What makes this place stand out is the value you get with the dinner specials. For around $10, you can order a dinner plate which includes chicken teriyaki, rice, salad, and even a bowl of Ramen. It really is a great opportunity to sample their soup and have a regular entrée at the same time.

The place is right off of California Avenue, so keep your eyes peeled because you might miss it. Also, Ramen Club is quite small inside and people are always lined up. My advice here is to come early and come hungry.

It’s a spot for dates because…
Ramen Club offers a great value for the quality of food and quantity. The menu also offers a mix of different items which is helpful for those craving different things.

Chris takes a look at a San Jose sushi spot. Come see the many varieties of sushi rolls Sushi Zen has to offer. We're sure you'll discover a new favorite here.

Sushi Zen
1305 N. 1st St.
San Jose, CA 95112
(408) 453-1070

If you asked me what my favorite type of food was I’d clearly reply with “Sushi”. I didn’t start off being the avid and overly obsessive sushi fanatic I am today. I used to hate sashimi. The thought of eating raw fish to me wasn’t very appealing, but now I just can’t get enough of it

While I was in San Jose, I decided to try out Sushi Zen with one of my friends Quan, and two of my younger cousins, Jeffrey and Justin. The first thing I noticed when I walked into Sushi Zen was how the restaurant was separated into 3 sections. When you enter the restaurant, you’ll be at the cash register where you’ll wait to be seated by one of the waitresses or waiters. To your right you have the sushi bar, and to the left the dinning and seating area. The décor was pretty much your average sushi joint.

Sushi Zen’s menu selection for the special sushi rolls was huge, and fairly priced. Prices ranged from $9-13 for an 8 piece roll and $12-15 for their “House Special Rolls”. Besides the special rolls, they also had Bento boxes, Traditional Maki & Nigiri Rolls, Sashimi, and appetizers that you could choose from.

We started off with ordering a total of 6 special rolls, Play Boy, Wow Wow, Speed-O, Dynamite, Skipper, and the Shrimp Lover. Each roll was presented on its own plate and we loved every single one we ordered. The rolls held up well and didn’t fall apart when I went to grab a piece. They were also topped generously, and every bite had a nice portion of sashimi. It really felt like I was getting my money’s worth, especially with the Wow Wow, which was heavily topped with thick pieces of scallop.

The service was also great, we never once had to ask for refills as the waitresses would come by our table and give us refills if they saw that our cups were empty or running low. I will see you again, Sushi Zen.

It’s a spot for dates because…
Good food, great service, nice atmosphere, and a wide selection of sushi.

www.gochifusiontapas.com

First of all, I want to give a special shout out to the great people at Foodbuzz. They hosted a special dinner for Featured Publishers at Gochi, a Japanese fusion tapas restaurant. We had the opportunity to meet up with fellow foodies. It was a great experience and we hope to see all of you soon.

The atmosphere is great. It’s a very lively spot. The Japanese style décor really brings this place together. We were able to sit in the middle table and I was surprised that you had to remove your shoes to get to the table. At first I thought we were going to have a traditional Japanese dinner where you would sit on your knees or be cross legged. The way the table was set up gave it this illusion. You actually sit down normally, with the table being low.

The food was very delicious. It was interesting to see how they took traditional Japanese dishes and added a bit of flare to them. We started off with the Kinoko Frisee Warm Salad. A tasty dish that was simple. I was hyped when I saw the Hamachi Carpaccio. As a big Hamachi lover, I really enjoyed it. Next were the Renkon Hasami, which was a shrimp and lotus deep fried dish, and Kani Cream Croquette, a deep fried crab dish. These two dishes really packed some flavor. I know I’ll be ordering these when we go back.

The food didn’t stop there. A chicken and eggplant dish called Tori Nasu Garlic Chicken came out. The sauce was sweet and would go perfect with a little bit of rice. That’s not all. The highlight of the night was when a pizza came out. The Kurobuta Chasu Miso Fusion Pizza surprised me. I would never expect such a dish to come out of a Japanese restaurant. Hands down, it was my favorite dish of the night.

Gochi is definitely worth checking out. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the dishes these folks serve up. They combine great flavor, interesting combinations of food, and a lively atmosphere. You are sure to have a great time at this spot.

It’s a spot for dates because…
Gochi Fusion Tapas features a great dining experience mixed with unique food combinations.
