Black Bear Diner doesn’t look like your typical diner. Step inside and you’ll be greeted with bear decorations everywhere. They stay true to their name. Comfort food lovers will find their favorite classics here to enjoy.

We’ve had plenty of Sunday brunches here. I ordered corned beef one time and couldn’t stop talking about it. During our most recent visit, my younger brother Lawrence, Rose, and I ordered the corned beef. I guess you could say I had something to do with it. When you get three people ordering the same thing, that means something must be good. Three orders of the corned beef at Black Bear Diner left us satisfied. This isn’t that watery canned stuff either. You are getting the real deal. It’s chunky. It’s shredded. It’s some of the better corned beef in the area.

The Huge portions of food here will leave you stuffed. And that’s true with every item at Black Bear Diner. Be sure to bring your appetite if your planning to stop by.

We spent our weekend in Monterey and you know what that means. I get cravings for clam chowder whenever I’m over there.  Lando decided to make a quick stop down by Fisherman’s Warf for a quick bite to eat. We stopped by Old Fisherman’s Grotto for their award winning clam chowder. 

The chowder that they had here was packed with clams. It was very creamy too. Out of all of the spots I’ve had clam chowder, this had to be the best. You can try it for yourself. Want to look like a tourist? Order it in a breadbowl like we did! I always order clam chowder in breadbowls and I don’t mind looking like one. Hey, I’m visiting the area anyways right? Most of the restaurants in Fisherman’s Warf will give out samples of their clam chowder. Trust me, you will eventually walk back to Old Fisherman’s Grotto for their chowder.

There’s plenty of other spots to see when you’re down by Monterey’s Fisherman’s Warf. From small shops to getting on a boat for whale watching, feel free to walk around and check everything out.

Drive through Lighthouse Avenue during the night and you can’t help but notice the dim red lights that peer through Hula’s windows. Step inside and you’ll be greeted by a cozy and relaxed atmosphere with plenty of Hawaiian décor surrounding you. You can’t help but notice the Tiki masks and carvings. How about the food?

By looking at the menu you can get a sense of Hawaiian influence through Hula’s dishes. From fresh seafood to pulled pork, they serve it here. I’ve found that the dishes we’ve ordered were very flavorful. The calamari here is my favorite. You will get thick cuts calamari that is lightly battered along with sticky rice topped with a mango salsa. It is served with a sweet soy based sauce compliments it very well. It is a welcomed change from the calamari I’ve had that came with either aioli or tartar sauce.

The sweet potato fries here also top my list of must orders. They are served with a semi-spicy dipping sauce. They can get very addicting, especially if you are sipping on their drinks. Yes, Hula’s wouldn’t be complete without Tiki inspired drinks. Drinks are served in a Tiki mug that can also be purchased as a souvenir. The last time I was there, I tried out the Dr. Funk, which is a piña colada inspired drink.

With all of the great restaurants in the area, I can say that Hula’s takes a unique twist to the dining experience.

Monterey, CA is home to great seafood restaurants and views of the Pacific Ocean. Not to mention, Cannery Row. I got a chance to revisit my old workplace with my family to enjoy some good food. It had been about eight years since I’ve last visited Fish Hopper. I used to work in the back of the house where all the fun goes down in restaurants. On to the food.

The first thing you may notice about Fish Hopper is the views you get. If you’re lucky enough, you can grab a window seat and enjoy your meal looking over the Pacific Ocean. I remember being able to see whales come by at one time. There’s something about enjoying seafood and getting a great view with it that make for a perfect combination.

We were practically starving when we stepped into Fish Hopper. We were so hungry that I didn’t take time to snap photos of what we ordered. Everyone got down and started to eat. Not a big problem because out in the front of the restaurant, there was a display of various dishes they serve. I was able to take pictures of those dishes. I just want to give you all an idea of how they present their food.

I wanted to share my food so I opted to get the chef sampler. It came with fried calamari, a fish cake, and a grilled artichoke. I still laugh at myself because I was eating the artichoke leaf the wrong way. Next, Lawrence had the sand dabs. They were grilled and included mashed potatoes. My mom ordered one of the specials. It was a seafood salad that came packed with shrimp, crab, and plenty of fresh greens. Finally, Rose ordered the crab ravioli with shrimp and scallops. It was smothered in a lobster cream sauce. I thought this dish was the best out of all.

After eating at Fish Hopper take a stroll around Cannery Row. You can either head out to the Ghirardelli store for ice cream and chocolate or stop and visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Not only can you enjoy a great meal down here, but you can have a great time just walking around the area.
