Amidst Lake Tahoe Boulevard’s countless ski shops, hotels, inns, and restaurants, hides a local favorite that serves hearty good old American style breakfast. The Red Hut Café has been catering to the locals and tourists alike. We all know that you can’t start your day out on the snow without having a full stomach of food. We did just that.

That morning I had the TV tuned to Travel Channel with Man V. Food on. Adam Richman was devouring a huge pancake topped with chocolate, ice cream, and whipped cream from DeLuca’s in Pittsburg, PA. I then flipped the channel to Food Network and Bobby Flay was on sharing his recipe of blue corn pancakes. You could say that my pancake craving unleashed itself. We got into the car and headed off.

As you step into the Red Hut Café you will feel the home style vibe. Diners talking about their vacation plans to stories about the day out on the slopes can be heard all around. Old cola posters are scattered around along with a map of Lake Tahoe. There are traditional tables to be seated at or if you’re in a rush, you can take a seat at the counter.

When we were seated, I already knew I was going to order pancakes.

A big scoop of butter topped the golden brown pancakes and was slowly melting. Anxious to give them a try, I smothered the butter all around and poured on the maple syrup. Perfect. They pancakes were light and fluffy. With all of the syrup I drizzled, the pancakes absorbed all of the sweet syrup and offered a softer delicate texture.

We also had a traditional hash browns with eggs and bacon breakfast. The bacon was fried to a crispy perfection. The hash browns also had a nice crispy outside with tender bites of potato strings. I’d love to start my day, everyday with a plate like this.

It was quite a satisfying meal to start off the day. Now that we had our bellies filled with carbs, it was time to head out.

A big hearty breakfast should not be missed before a day out in the snow. Take a seat at The Red Hut Café to get your fill with their good old fashioned American breakfast. You will see why this spot has been a hit with everyone throughout the years.

One of the questions that come to mind when I go on a vacation is where to eat. My rule of thumb is to shy away from the chain restaurants and try to find restaurants that locals dine at. I thought we would have a hard time finding local eateries in South Lake Tahoe when we visited for the weekend. Luckily, there was a spot called Freshies that catered to the South Lake Tahoe locals with its Hawaiian influenced cuisine. I know what you’re thinking. Hawaiian? In Lake Tahoe? The two make an odd combination, but yet they’ve been doing it for eight years and have been successful. They must be doing something right.

Freshies mission is to focus on fresh ingredients. They make everything from scratch. It’s printed on their menu and it shows in their food. When you have a restaurant that pushes for that mission or promise, it makes you appreciate their efforts even more. It’s nice to know that there’s a restaurant in the area that does pride their food on freshness and quality.

And yes, it shows. I ordered the Fish Tacos Platter and was left amazed at how it tasted. You get a choice of how you want your fish prepared. Choose from grilled, fried, or blackened. I opted to go for a healthy route and went with the grilled. They used Red Rock Cod in the tacos. The fish was flakey and moist. As you bite into the taco, the crunch of the lettuce, the spice of the zesty sauce all combine with the fish. A side of rice, black beans, cole slaw, chips, and salsa come with the platter. You are definitely getting plenty to eat. My only disappointment was that my meal only included two tacos. I could have gone for two more.

Along with the tacos, we had an order of their Teriyaki Chicken platter. This was also packed with plenty of sides. A salad with sesame vinaigrette dressing was included. The vinaigrette brought together a tangy and sweet taste to the fresh greens. The chicken thighs themselves were grilled with beautiful char marks. This locked in all of the juices of the chicken. You get a bright yellow bits of pineapple garnishing the top of the chicken thighs. The teriyaki sauce The teriyaki sauce at Freshies had stronger flavors of tangy pineapple as opposed to traditional sweet Japanese teriyaki sauce. It was a welcomed change.

This was a perfect way to start off our trip to Lake Tahoe.
